A Call To Rest
The cows out back don’t seem to fight to stay awake. I rarely see them lay down, but when they do, they are willing. In their herd resting. Everything about that resonates in me especially when I consider how often 10pm arrives and I fight sleep to try and do something productive.
Watching the cows rest today reminded me of a DesiringGod post I read this week titled “Three Reasons To Get Some Sleep” by Jonathan Parnell:
A Bird’s Nest
It appears that a mamma bird has made a home above the lights on our back shed! Hopefully Josh, Norah, and I will soon encounter the babies to come- chirping away and learning how to fly. Everything about seeing this sings new life. Owen West is a comin’ soon and boy oh boy are we looking forward to it!
One Tree Still Fighting
There’s a tree I’ve been wondering about all winter longer, one whose leaves just keep hangin’ on. All the others surrounding are bare, but not this one. I’m far from a tree expert, so I consulted my sweet husband about this. He told me we have several of these trees though this one still has leaves while all the others have fallen. They don’t look like they need to be on the branches anymore. Brown as can be. But they are still hangin’ on.
I’m reminded to keep fighting the good fight.
1 Timothy 6:12-16
12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,
14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 which he will display at the proper time-he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
This sticks out to me:
Fight the good fight of faith.
God, who gives life to all things
Dwells in unapproachable light
This puts things into perspective, giving me a glimpse of reality once again. The Only Sovereign who gives life to all things and dwells in unapproachable light is my God. And my God is with me through the good fight, equipping me with everything needed as He has given me Himself in Jesus Christ, new life indeed!
So no matter what, it’s never hopeless though all the other trees are bare.
